Old-Fashioned Candied Peanuts

These sweet and crunchy old-fashioned candied peanuts are coated in a crisp sugar shell and make the perfect snack, holiday treat, or homemade gift. With simple pantry ingredients and an easy stovetop method, this classic recipe delivers irresistible sweet-and-salty flavor in every bite.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups raw peanuts
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

  1. Line a large baking sheet or tray with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Add the peanuts, sugar, water, and salt to a large saucepan and stir to combine.
  3. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring frequently.
  4. Continue cooking as the water evaporates and the sugar begins to crystallize around the peanuts.
  5. Stir constantly while the sugar coating turns dry and grainy.
  6. Keep cooking until portions of the sugar begin to melt and lightly caramelize, coating the peanuts with a golden finish.
  7. Remove the pan from the heat and immediately stir in the vanilla extract.
  8. Spread the peanuts onto the prepared baking sheet in an even layer.
  9. Separate any large clusters while the coating is still warm.
  10. Allow the peanuts to cool completely until the coating hardens and becomes crunchy.
  11. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container.

Notes

Raw peanuts work best for this recipe, but roasted unsalted peanuts can also be used.
Stir continuously once the sugar begins to crystallize to prevent burning.
For a warmer flavor, add ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon along with the sugar.
Let the peanuts cool completely before storing to maintain their crunchy texture.
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
These make excellent homemade gifts for holidays, hostess baskets, and party favors.
