Double Chocolate Reindeer Muffins for Christmas
Chocolate chips tucked into a cocoa muffin are already a good reason to turn on the oven. Add a little chocolate frosting and a reindeer face, and you have a Christmas treat ready for a holiday brunch, a festive lunchbox, or dessert after a Christmas movie.
These chocolate reindeer muffins start with a simple sour cream batter. The decorations go on after baking, so you can make the muffins ahead and leave the fun part for later. There’s also a bakery-muffin shortcut below for days when you only have time to decorate.

Recipe at a glance: Makes 12 standard muffins | Prep: 15 minutes | Bake: 18–22 minutes | Cooling: about 45 minutes | Decorating: 15 minutes | Total: about 1 hour 40 minutes
Why Make These Christmas Muffins?
- No mixer needed. A whisk and a spatula handle the batter.
- Chocolate in every bite. Cocoa flavors the batter, while chocolate chips add little pockets of melted chocolate.
- Easy to prepare in stages. Bake one day and decorate the next.
- Flexible finishing touches. A thin layer of frosting is enough to hold the face without turning the whole muffin into a heavily frosted dessert.
Ingredients

For the Double Chocolate Muffins
- 1½ cups (180 g) all-purpose flour
- ½ cup (45 g) unsweetened natural cocoa powder
- ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon fine salt
- 2 large eggs, at room temperature
- ½ cup (120 g) full-fat sour cream, at room temperature
- ½ cup (120 ml) milk, at room temperature
- ⅓ cup (80 ml) neutral oil, such as canola
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- ¾ cup (130 g) semisweet chocolate chips
For Decorating
- ½ cup thick chocolate frosting, homemade or store-bought
- 24 mini pretzel twists, plus a few extras for breakage
- 24 candy eyes
- 12 red candy-coated chocolates
Ingredient notes: Use unsweetened cocoa rather than drinking chocolate. Spoon flour into the measuring cup and level it, or use the gram measurement. Choose small pretzel twists so the antlers don’t overwhelm the muffin tops.
How to Make Chocolate Reindeer Muffins
1. Prepare the Pan and Oven
Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C) using conventional heat. Line a standard 12-cup muffin pan with paper liners. Set an oven rack in the center.
2. Combine the Dry Ingredients
Whisk the flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Break up any visible cocoa lumps so you don’t end up with dry pockets in the batter.
3. Mix the Wet Ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, sour cream, milk, oil, and vanilla until evenly combined.
4. Fold and Portion
Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Fold gently with a spatula until almost combined, then fold in the chocolate chips. Stop when no dry flour remains; a slightly lumpy batter is fine. Divide evenly among the 12 muffin cups, filling them approximately three-quarters full.
5. Bake and Cool Completely
Bake for 18–22 minutes, checking at 18 minutes. The tops should spring back lightly, and a toothpick inserted away from a chocolate chip should come out with a few moist crumbs but no wet batter. Leave in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Cool completely before decorating.
6. Add the Reindeer Faces
Spread about 2 teaspoons of chocolate frosting over each cooled muffin, leaving a small border. Carefully press the lower edge of two pretzels into the back of each muffin top. Add two candy eyes and a red nose to the frosting, then leave the muffins undisturbed for about 10 minutes before arranging them on a serving plate.
Tips for Neat Decorating
- Let the heat escape first. Even a slightly warm center can soften the frosting.
- Keep the frosting thick. If it runs off your spatula, it won’t support the candies well.
- Handle the antlers gently. Push close to the bottom of each pretzel rather than pressing on its upper loops.
- Decorate close to serving. Pretzels gradually absorb moisture from the muffins and lose their crunch.
- Leave headroom for transport. Use a deep container and keep the muffins in one layer.
Shortcuts and Variations
Bakery shortcut: Skip the batter and begin with 12 fully cooled chocolate muffins. You’ll only need the decorating ingredients and about 15 minutes of hands-on time.
Different noses: Use brown candy-coated chocolates for most of the batch and give just one muffin a red Rudolph nose.
No candy eyes: Pipe two small dots of thick vanilla frosting and add a mini chocolate chip to each one. These softer eyes will be more delicate during transport.
Make Ahead and Storage
Store completely cooled, undecorated muffins in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. For longer storage, wrap individually and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw while wrapped, then unwrap and decorate once they reach room temperature.
Decorated muffins look best the day they are assembled. Follow the frosting’s storage instructions: frosting that requires refrigeration means the finished muffins need refrigeration too. Add pretzels shortly before serving whenever possible, and expect them to soften if stored already attached.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my chocolate muffins turn out dry?
Too much flour or a few extra minutes in the oven can dry out muffins. Weigh the flour if possible, begin checking at the shorter baking time, and look for moist crumbs rather than waiting for a completely dry toothpick.
Can children help decorate these?
Yes. Once the muffins are cool, set out small bowls of decorations and let children arrange the faces with adult supervision. Hard candies and crunchy decorations aren’t appropriate for every age; remove or adapt them for younger children.
Are these muffins or cupcakes?
The base uses the muffin method: wet and dry ingredients are mixed separately, then folded together briefly. The chocolate frosting adds a dessert-style finish, so they fit comfortably on a Christmas sweets table.
